"Badgetts Star shortens the odds for breast cancer"

Malcolm Perry...Vancouver Sun

Bettering the odds:

Nobody gambles on breast cancer being eliminated soon. But bay mare Badgett Star is helping speed that day, and anybody betting on her has done very well this year. That’s because the six-year-old has won five of the six Hastings Park Racecourse claim races she’s entered, and each one generated cash for breast cancer research.

Pink Ribbon Stable principals Tracey Bell, Dixie Jacobson, Sarah Keeling, Brenda Kinsella, Mary Martin and Lindsay McLeod donate $1,000 when Badgett Star wins, $500 when she places, and $250 for a show. So Far, she’s kicked in over $15,000 that way.

Badgetts Star won’t run in the $125,000 B.C. Oaks stakes race September 20. But local Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society president Dixie Jacobson said the filly’s owners will be there, sponsoring a $100-ticket private-patio party – newdigs@telus.net – to help fund the Fraser Valley-based Crystal Gala Foundation’s anti-cancer efforts.
